2nd corse: Spicy Puna Cheese Steak is a very well balanced Philly Cheese Steak with pepper cheese and jalapeño peppers. Spice level is not mild. It has a little heft to it. Toasted to perfection bun. It’s looks small but is quite filling. I recommend it and will order it again.
What a way to set the stage for a great experience for my first time at Poi Dog Deli in Kailua Kona across from where Safeway used to be. 1st course: popcorn and Peanut Butter Milk Stout Nitro while I wait 20 minutes for my sandwich. There is plenty to look at on the walls to keep a person from getting bored during the wait. The beer is quite lovely. It’s smooth with a great nutty flavor. Flip the bottle upside down, set it in the glass, slowly pull the Boyle from the glass to create a foamy head. Check next post for the sandwich 2nd course.
Give a shout-out to @makana2020 for earning an International Flavor Award for his creation: Poi Coconut Butter. Poi is a superfood, locally sourced from Waipio Valley on The Big Island called Hawai’i. With the coconut butter it taste a bit like tapioca but with a superfood kick which will leave you feeling strong. Mahalo to you Makana.

A wonderful start to my day: Buckwheat pancakes, topped with butter, sugar-free Blueberry Maple Whiskey Syrup, Belgian Black Chocolate Coconut Butter, a touch of organic maple syrup, and a bit of sour cream. To drink?: Javaloha Peaberry Coffee. Thank you to @akakafallsfarm for the syrup and butters. They are truly amazing. Thanks to @shakalatte1. Still the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had. Thanks Mike for the smoked pig. Always delicious.

The 1st scotch I ever loved was Ardbeg 10. I asked my brother for my last birthday to buy my any $100+ bottle of scotch. He bought me Laphroig 10. I hated it. It burned my mouth. It was too peaty and harsh. I realized that this company has been around for over 200 years. No company can survive that long buy producing crap. So I knew it was me not understanding what the creators who made it were thinking. One day I was eating a Reuben sandwich while sipping on the Laphroaig 10 and I liked it. The scotch actually tasted sweet bc of the SOUR sauerkraut in the sandwich. I now enjoy my bottle of Laphroig 10 and this year I am treating myself to Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Hearing many times I must try some small batch artisan scotch I almost blindly have purchased this for the journey. If I don’t like it at first I must find out why. Turn your losses into wins and expand your horizons.
The Big Kahuna Breakfast at Lava Java I Kailua Kona is the perfect start for celebrating my birthday.

What happens to rain in Hawai’i above 13,000’ elevation? Snow!!!! It is always a beautiful sight to see a snow capped Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Enjoy.
Here is an ingenious Wet-side of Hawai’i Island (Hilo-side) work around. Living on dry-side (Kona-side) this issue never came up. How do you get gas from the delivery truck into the underground storage containers, while it’s raining, for the last week, up to 4 inches per hour? Sandbags!! You create a sandbag barrier around it. Mahalo to all the workers who excel at there jobs during rain, shine, hurricane, and pandemic.

I was watching a short video on the @simplypiano_by_joytunes app as I am learning to play some classical pieces when I saw this quote. I had to share because it is a simple reminder that anything worth having is worth going through the pain to achieve. Love you JoyTunes.
